Angels watch over my baby,
Grant him a lifetime of your care
So that even when I can not be with him
I'll know you will always be there.
Angels watch over my baby,
Grant him a lifetime of your love
So that even when my eyes are closed
I'll know that you watch over from above.
Angels watch over my baby,
Grant him your laughter and joy.
For there is no one on earth any dearer,
to me, than my little baby boy

This was the first lullaby that I ever wrote for my son. One day late in my second trimester, as I pieced together the pieces of my wedding quilt, I started singing this song. I sang as I stitched and the verses came easily. I could never have guessed how appropriate it would be.
I first sang this lullaby to Clayton the day that he was born. He was strapped down in an isolette with a breathing tube and ready to make the ambulance trip to the NICU at a larger hospital. I reached in, lightly touched his tiny hand and sang the first verse to him. My father asked me later if I had been singing in Latin! I was still under the influence of the anesthetics but I remember it all clearly. It was a great comfort to see him before he was transported and to ask the angels to be with him.
Later, when Clayton was three, he saw a set of cards with pictures of angels on them. He pointed to a picture of a baby sleeping in a bed with four angels around him and said “Look Mamma! That me!”
“Wow, that is beautiful Clayton! When was that you?” I asked him.
“When I in the hospital Mamma. When I born.” Then he paused, remembering, and said sadly “I missed you Mamma.”
“I know sweetheart, I missed you, too.” I replied, “But when I can’t be with you, there are angels all around you.”
Our children remember more than we can imagine, and I am so grateful for all the angels that have watched over us and sheltered us in their wings.
