Beautiful Baby

"Beautiful baby, child of my dreams, the sandman says maybe he'll bring you a dream, up where the girls fly on ribbons and bows, where babies float by, just counting their toes..."
That's all I can remember of the lullaby my mother used to sing to me. My little boy loves for me to sing it to him, but I always get stuck and can't finish. I would love to know the rest of the words.

other lyrics NEW

Old Don McLean groupie who always loved "Wonderful Baby" but really kind of dark. Altered the bits I sang to our adopted babies.

Wonderful baby, living on love
The sandman says maybe he'll take you above,
Up where the birds fly with ribbons and bows
And babies float by just counting their toes.

Wonderful baby, ______ is your name,
You may not have fortune, you may not have fame.
But you are a gift only Jesus can give.
You'll have all our love as long as we live.

Beautiful tune but sad message NEW
by: Anonymous

I love this tune, and the chorus. So sweet. But some of the other lyrics are dreary and depressing. Why program young children to be cynical and full of angst from the start? I'd skip the main lyrics when singing this to my babies and grand babies, too. No wonder so many of us only know the chorus, from when the song was written years ago. The rest of the words ARE best forgotten.

10-Q!!

Thank you for submitting this lullaby query, I have wanted it for a couple of years but couldn't remember ANY words except "wonderful baby." The first time I heard it was in a true ghost story on TV, sung by a toddler, so even the tune was vague, but so compelling! Then, just recently, I heard it in a recording of a 1970s CBS Radio Mystery, beautifully sung by a man, must've been Don Maclean, as background for a public service message on something sweet to do with children. But still hard to catch the lyrics, except enough to know it was the same lullaby I'd heard in the ghost story. All I could grasp was "beautiful baby...tickle your toes..." Anyway, so glad you liked it too, enough to save me from wondering forever. Thanks so much. :)

Just look the lyrics up on line.

Wonderful baby, living on love
The sandman says maybe he'll take you above,
Up where the girls fly on ribbons and bows
And babies float by just counting their toes.

Wonderful baby nothin' but new,
The world has gone crazy, I'm glad I'm not you.
At the beginning or is it the end? It goes
in and comes out and starts over again.

Wonderful baby livin' on love
Thesandman says maybe he'll take you above,
Up where the girls fly on ribbons and bows, where babies float by, just counting their toes.

Wonderful baby I'll watch while you grow. If
I knew the future you'd be first to know. But
I don't know nothin' of what life's about,
Just as long as you live, you'll never find out.

Wonderful baby, nothin' to fear.
Love whom you will, but doubt what you hear.
They'll whisper sweet things to make untrue. So be good to yourself, that's all you can do.

You're a wonderful baby livin' on love
the sandman says maybe he'll take you above, up where the girls fly on ribbons and bows, where babies float by, just counting their toes, where
babies float by, just counting their toes...
