Child of Sunshine Lyrics

Download Lyrics

You are my Child of Sunshine
You are my very brightest moon,
You are the starlight in my eyes
From July right through June.

You are the well where I do wish
Where fountains overflow
You are my deep primeval forest
Where the tall pines grow.

You are my still and sleeping lake
You are my winter squall
And through all your changing moods
Deeper in love with you I fall.

You are my wolf that howls at night
You are my owl that hoots and cries
And through all those darkened hours
I sing you lullabies

You are my ocean’s wisest dream
You are my cool wind’s favorite dance
I am yours and you are mine
And none of this is by chance.

You are my Child of Sunshine
And when you travel near or far,
I hope that you will always know
My heart is where you are.

Background from Amy

I wrote this lullaby in the autumn of 2005. My son was four months old and his grandmother had begun to call him her “Prince of Sunshine”. I loved that title and wanted to share it with others.

On cool autumn day, Clayton and I went to a nearby lake where there was a walking path. I tucked him into his front carrier and we began to walk around the lake. The fallen leaves crunched under our feet and the aroma of fall enveloped us. We were alone out there.

By the end of our stroll, he had fallen fast asleep and I had all of the lyrics in my mind - but no paper.

When we got back to the car, I scrambled softly around until I found a napkin and quickly scribbled down the lyrics before I forgot them.

It took a while for the melody to develop. After a few months of juggling, it settled down into what it is today.

Now, when I ask Clayton what song he wants me to sing, he'll say "sing my song mama". It is always my pleasure. Everytime I sing it, joy flows through me, remembering that autumn stroll on a glorious fall day.
