Lie still little thing

by Ann Cowdrey
(Nottingham UK)

Lie still little thing no more whimpering listen while I sing and make less noise.
In your Granny's day people used to say
thieves will take away all crying boys.
Now your being good I see so the thieve won't hear you. You are very safe with me I will stay quite near you. Oh what would I do if that tale were true no one will have you my best of joys.

I remember my Mother singing this in the early 1950,s Just wondered where it came from.

Where can I find someone singing this - couldn’t locate on YouTube? Learnt it in the choir at 11 - still love to sing it but would like to hear someone do it properly! Recently lost my husband and I find singing lullabies really soothes me.

Fond Memories NEW
by: Anonymous

The version my mother sang to me in the Bahamas was,

"Keep still little thing. No more whimpering. Listen while I sing and make less noise. In my mother's days people use to say, thieves will take away all crying boys. You are very still I see, so the thief won't hear you. You are very safe with me. I shan't let them near you. Oh what would I do if that tale were true, no thief shall have you my pride and joy".

It also brings back fond memories for me!

Lullaby NEW

My six year old grandson won't go to sleep unless I sing this to him. Missed one and I thought a bomb had gone off the noise he made, so I now make sure that I sing it to him. It's his and my special song. 🤗

A memorable song from my youth NEW
by: Anonymous

As a member of the music club in my primary school in kakamega, our music teacher the late Joseph Mbwavi, taught us this lullaby song in 1968. We competed against other primary schools in the district and were ranked third. It brings back fond memories of my youth.

lullubye song NEW
by: EKK

I remember Abraham Adoli used to teach this song . That was Lumbwa Primary school but Currently Kipkelion. The song gives me fond memory of the choir members we used to be in the same group. Before he retired, the late Abraham Adoli sang for the Kenya's First President Jomo Kenyatta and got promoted

lullubye song NEW
by: Anonymous

I sang this song in Kenya. I was in middle school by then in 1965. My choir master was the Late Abraham Adoli. It was so well sang that it vibrates in my mind to this day. I relocated to USA and was always asking for the Late Adoli till this year 2018 someone told me that Adoli passed on in 2017. When here in USA, I see Adoli leading the choir. I also see my fellow choir members sing and tears flow out of my eyes....

My niece and childhood memories NEW
by: Anonymous

My mum sings this song to my niece whenever she needs to sleep, so whenever she wants to sleep she comes by me or to my mum and says 'lie still'
She's sooooo cute when she does that. It was also a song from my childhood days.

My dad used to sing this song to me when I was little. I lost him when I was 4yrs old. Now 29 years later I sing this song for my kids. In a way it feels like I am giving them a little of their granddad's that they could never experience.

I sang this in primary school too (UK, early 70s). It was in one of the Oxford School Music Books which were very common in primary and secondary schools at the time. I think it was in the Senior - Preliminary book. A lovely tune. I think the words are translated from another language, but I don't know the original.

I'm 29 years old now, I have 4 siblings and we all grew up with this lullaby. I thought it was only my family that listened to it. Good to see that other families also grew up with this lullaby
