My Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me, to me
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me
Last night as I lay on my pillow
Last night as I lay on my bed
Last night as I lay on my pillow
I dreamed that my Bonnie was dead*
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me, to me
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me
Oh blow ye the winds o'er the ocean
And blow ye the winds o'er the sea
Oh blow ye the winds o'er the ocean
And bring back my Bonnie to me
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me, to me
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me
The winds have blown over the ocean
The winds have blown over the sea
The winds have blown over the ocean
And brought back my Bonnie to me
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me, to me
Bring back, bring back
Bring back my Bonnie to me
* I usually substitute “I dreamed that we were wed.”

Background
Traditional Scottish folk song of unknown origin. Though mostly thought of as a love song, some speculate that it was originally about “Bonnie Prince Charlie” a.k.a. Charles Edward Stuart.
Personal Note
Singing this song always brings me back to the days when I was learning to play the piano. In my mind's eye I can still see the illustration on the songbook page for My Bonnie, see my mother's hand gently holding the book open and feel the hard bench under me as I played this charming little melody.
