Other Verses

This is one of the verses for which I have been searching but there is another that has such beautiful imagery and I would love to get it.

It is something like:

When the lark leaves its nest
God will wake the from rest
When the long night is o'er
God will wake thee once more

Thank you

This is a beautiful little song - and there is something especially holy about a child's innocent sleep, which is captured by these words and appropriate accompanying music. I am making my little grand daughter a book of songs for Christmas, and this will be the final one.

Memories..
by: Katrina

My mother sung this when we were children but I could only remember some of the words. Now I've seen the words I can shut my eyes and hear her singing it.

Sleep My Little One Sleep
by: anne baker-hoeppner

I remember with great nostalgia, my mother singing Brahms Lullaby to me in England (where I was born in June 1939), when I was a very young child over seventy years ago. As far as I can recall, the words she sang so beautifully were the following:

Sleep my little one sleep
Fond vigil I keep
Lie warm in thy nest
By moonbeams caressed

When the dawn meets the skies
God will bid thee arise
When the dawn meets the skies
God will bid thee arise

I would be interested to know a) if the above first verses are part of the complete original English translation of the original German lyrics and b) the name of the British translator.

Cadence?
by: Grandpa Roger

Sleep my little one sleep
Fond vigil I keep
Lie warm in thy nest
While moonbeams caress.
When the dawn tints the sky, God will bid thee arise,
When the dawn tints the sky, God will bid thee arise.

Holy angels abide
All night by thy side
In dreams they unfold
Heaven's portals of gold.
Slumber softly at rest, in thy dreamland so blest,
Slumber softly at rest, in thy dreamland so blest.

Note: When singing, "fond vigil" it is sung as "fo-ond vigil" which is why it might sound like "for on vigil".

Brahms Lullaby-I remember these words
by: Anonymous

Sleep my little one sleep
Loving watch now I keep
Safe beside you at rest
The moon beams caress
When the morn tints the sky
God will bid thee arise
When the morn tints the sky
God will bid thee arise

The correct 1st verse is:

Sleep my little one sleep fond vigil I keep, lie warm in thy nest by moonbeams caressed. When the dawn tints the sky god will bid thee arise, when the dawn tints the sky god will bid thee arise

I remember singing this at school and the only difference I note was we sang 'fond vigil' not for on vigil

Sleep my little one.
by: Jeannie

Sleep my little one sleep, for on vigil I keep.
Lie warm in thy nest, while moonbeams caress.
When the morn tints the sky, God will bid thee arise:
When the morn tints the sky
God will bid thee arise.

Holy angels abide all night by thy side:
In dreams they unfold , heavens portals of gold.
Slumber softly at rest, in thy dreamland so blest,
Slumber softly at rest, in thy dreamland so blest

Sung to the music of Brahms Lullaby.
I used to sing this to both my children to get them to sleep, and it worked every time.
I learned this at school
