Steal Away Lyrics

Download Lyrics

Chorus:
Steal Away, steal away
Steal away to Jesus
Steal away, steal away home
I ain’t got long to stay here.

My Lord calls me
He calls me by the thunder
The trumpet sounds within my soul
I ain’t got long to stay here

(Chorus)

Green trees are bending
Poor sinners stand trembling
The trumpet sounds within my soul
I ain’t got long to stay here

(Chorus)

Background

This African American spiritual was written by Choctaw Freedman Wallis Willis around 1862. Wallis Willis was a gifted composer who also wrote Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. He is an inspirational figure. Though he was discriminated against during his lifetime due to his race, he rose above that to share his remarkable spiritual and musical gifts. Despite the hardships of his life, his music is enduring in its beauty, purity and truth.
