The Butterfly Song
by: Anonymous

I used to play this song 30+ years ago, when I began teaching kindergarten. It is from the Macmillan Sing & Learn LP collection. I remember the words, though no recording exists that I know of:

THE BUTTERFLY SONG
(composer unknown)

The caterpillar was very small
He could not do very much at all
He would crawl, crawl, crawl.
Time would pass so slowly by,
The caterpillar looked up at the sky
"I want to fly, fly, fly."

"Like a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly, fly,
Like a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly high up in the sky."

*He started getting tired of this
So he made a hard-shelled chrysalis
He would sleep and dream.
He spend a long time deep in sleep
Dreaming of a butterfly proud and free
He would sleep and dream…

LIke a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly, fly,
Like a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly high up in the sky.

He slept ‘til it was late that spring
Then awoke to find an amazing thing
He could fly, fly, fly.
His wings stretched out so large and fine
In the sunlit sky they would shimmer and shine
He could fly, fly, fly.

Like a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly, fly,
Like a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly high up in the sky.

Like a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly, fly,
Like a butterfly, butterfly, butterfly high up in the sky.

*The actual words are,
He started feeling sleepy soon
So he spun himself a warm cocoon
but I altered them to be more scientifically accurate.
