The Stars are out, the moon is up...

by Ben
(Circle Pines, MN)

The stars are out, The moon is up,
Its time to go to bed.
I'm so glad you have a place,
to lay your sleepy head.

Go to sleep my little one,
beneath the evening stars.
You will always have a place,
To lay your sleepy head.

Grandfather clock stands in the hall... NEW
by: Anonymous

In response to Jenn who posted:

"There was another song I remember that went like this "grandfather clock stands in the hall, he’s very old and he’s very tall and tho he is a stately sight, he never can tell the time just right." I’ve been looking for that for years. I’ll check tonight because I haven’t in awhile. But if anyone knows please let me know! "

I have been looking for this for a while myself! I remembered it playing at the end of the cassette for Disney Discovery Series Presents: Telling Time. It is called "Tick Tock" by Linda Arnold. I recently found it on Apple Music!

My mother’s lyrics NEW
by: Shauna

I always thought she got this from Sharon, Lois, & Bram; but as another commenter posted, Fred Penner would also track. Here are my mom’s lyrics:

The stars are out, the moon is up
It’s time to go to bed
I’m so glad you have a place
To lay your little head

So have a deep and peaceful sleep
Dream away the hours
When you wake the sun will come
To shine upon your flowers

Go to sleep, my little one
Beneath the evening stars
You will always have a friend
No matter where you are.

My favorite Lullaby NEW
by: Tony N

My parents sang this to me when I was little and I continue on the tradition with my girls and play with acoustic guitar when possible. I've wondered if the lyrics were the same in each household, here's our version:

The stars are out
The moon is up
It's time to go to bed
I'm so glad
You found a place
To lay your little head

Fall asleep
My little one
Dream away the hours
When you wake
The sun shall make
A place between the flowers

By far my favorite lullaby melody, thanks for singing everyone!

by: Law

My mother sang this to me every night as a child, and now that I have my own baby, I am continuing the tradition.

The chord progression I play is the following

C Am G Em
C Bm C Am
G Bm C Am G
Em F Em Dm C
C Am C Bm Am G
C Am C D
C Am C G F Em
Em F Em Dm C

My mother also always sang the first line:

"The stars are out, the moon is out"

RIP, Mom!

I also love this song and sing it to my grandchildren. The chords I use are: G, C, D7 or D. Depending on how high/low your voice is you could use the A combination of A, D, E/E7.
But that doesn’t give you the tune!! But if you know the tune it’s easy enough to worry out.

Loved this forever
by: Jenn

I loved listening to my Disney tapes as a child and would sing this to myself at night. Sounds kinda sad lol But I loved it and knew very word.

I still knew all the lyrics when my son was born and sang it to him as well as my niece and nephew.

I also sang it kids I babysat and when I was a nanny. The lyrics are so appropriate even when singing to an unrelated child.

Now I’m a grandma and sang it to the grand babies. Tonight I have all three and decided to look for it and found it! I remember looked years ago and it was nowhere to be found.
So the babies listened to it tonight.

So many sweet memories of my childhood and the children who have been in my life. <3

There was another song I remember that went like this "grandfather clock stands in the hall, he’s very old and he’s very tall and tho he is a stately sight, he never can tell the time just right." I’ve been looking for that for years. I’ll check tonight because I haven’t in awhile. But if anyone knows please let me know!

I can’t remember where I got this from. I thought it was Kenny Loggins but have looked and can’t find that he recorded it
My memory of it goes like this
The sun has gone the moon is up
It’s time to go to bed
I’m so glad you have a place
To lay your weary head
Have a deep and peaceful sleep
Dream away the hours
When you wake the sun will come
Up to meet the flowers
Go to sleep my little one
Beneath the evening star
You will always have a friend
No matter where you are

Sweet song. NEW
by: B Haynes

I sang it this way to my kids when they were little. I had cancer and wasn't sure I would survive.

The moon is up the stars are out
It's time to go to bed
I'm so glad you have a place to lay your little head
Have a deep and peaceful sleep dream away the hours
When you wake the sun will come and smile upon the flowers.
Go to sleep my little ones beneath the evening stars
You will always have your mommy no matter where you are.

Recording on YouTube NEW
by: Anonymous

You can find a recording of this song on YouTube. Just search "Friends Lullaby" or "Larry Groce Friends Lullaby". I used to listen to the Disney tapes and recently had a little boy. He'll be 9 months in a week, and this song popped in my head from out of the blue today! (Even I listened to the Disney tapes A LOT as a kid and sang-along with the lyrics book). I was able to find a few more of my favorites by Larry Groce, too (I don't think I ever knew it name, and didn't remember they were Disney tapes. We still have some of the Disney tapes, not sure if we have the favorite songs one, and definitely don't know where that lyrics book is.). Thank goodness for YouTube!

These are the original lyrics:

"The stars are out, the moon is up
It's time to go to bed
I'm so glad you have a place
To lay your little head

Have a deep and peaceful sleep
Dream away the hours
When you wake, the sun will come
To smile upon the flowers

Go to sleep my little friend
Beneath the evening stars
You will always have a friend
No matter where you are."

I sang this to my kids as well. I remembered it beginning as
The sun has gone the moon is up
It’s time to go to bed
As the first line. Either way am so glad to find it again. Now my question is did Kenny Loggins sing it??? Who was the artist that sang it?

The moon is out, the stars are bright
Its time to go to bed
I'm so glad you have a place

to shine upon the flowers.

Go to to sleep my little one
beneath the evening stars,

I used to sing this song to my four children. (I changed the next to last line to "I will always love you") They in turn have been singing it to children. Last weekend, three of my grandsons sang it to me! We still have the LP version. Words and music by Larry Groce.

Combo version
by: Frances

Without trying I combined this song with another I believe it came from a Disney album. My daughter sings it to her children now.
The stars are out, the moon is up.
It's time to go to bed.
Close your little weary eyes and rest your sleepy head.
Have a deep and peaceful sleep; dream away the hours; when you wake the sun will come to smile upon flowers.
Go to sleep my little one, beneath the evening star.
You will always have a friend no matter where you are.

I would sing this song to my children when they were little when they would go to bed. The words are different, I also heard it off of a Disney record. My daughter sang it to my granddaughter, hopefully it will keep being handed down. I love this song.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I sing that same song to my daughter every night and used to sing it to my son's before they grew up. The albums names are "disney's children's favorite songs" there are the of them. Toy could probably find them on amazon now. Walmart used to carry them.

Remembering our son
by: Anonymous

Have a deep and peaceful sleep.....dream away the hours.....and so forth..........most beautiful lullabye I ever sang to my 3 boys. Wish I could get a recording of this song. My youngest son, started singing this at 3 years old with me and we video taped it. I sang it to him for years...well until he left to first grade........he just passed away at 24 and half years old and our hearts are so broken.......a wonderful reminder of his early years. We love him forever.

by: Sue Cherry

The title of the lullaby is Disney's Friend's Lullaby and you left out the middle verse as well as changing the word "Friend" to "One". The entire thing should read as follows:

The stars are out, the moon is up
It's time to go to bed
I'm so glad you have a place
To lay your weary head

Have a deep and peaceful sleep
Dream away the hours
When you wake the sun will rise
To smile upon the flowers

Go to sleep my little friend
Beneath the evening stars
You will always have a friend
No matter where you are.
